I think when it comes to the TVD fandom, about 80% of the people care about the ships and endgames more than the plot.

All the characters can sit around playing Duck Duck Goose or Pin the Tail on the Doppelganger for the rest of the season and no one will really care, once their OTP shares a glance or a kiss or something.
